Oscars
Did you know the official name of the Oscar is the Academy Award of Merit?

Though the actual story of how the Academy Award of Merit cam to be known as the Oscar is unclear, the most popular story has been that Academy librarian – and eventual executive director – Margaret Herrick believed it resembled her uncle Oscar. After she made that observation, the Academy staff began calling the award ‘Oscar’. The nickname was not officially used until 1939.

The Oscar stands 16 ½” tall including a 3” base and weighs a hefty 8 ½ pounds. The statue is plated in 24 karat gold with a baked lacquer finish.

During World War II, the Oscar statues were cast in plaster when manufacturing with metal was restricted.

Each Oscar is numbered in order to track them in the case of theft or loss. Numbering started in 1949 with the somewhat arbitrary number of 501.
