Since about 1990 Newline began developing the finest collection of gold accented acrylic awards with the intent of offering a lower price point corporate award to our clients. Acrylic, with its easy to fabricate characteristics and exceptional value was the medium of choice with multiple gold options to enhance our line. Gold acrylic, though fabricated the same as clear, reacts differently to light and reflects laser engraving with a rich depth that says congratulations with class and dignity.
How do you get the gold highlights?
Gold is the color of Champions – and our design team has spent countless hours developing and selecting the finest gold acrylic line. Gold tint is often added to the acrylic monomer before casting as acrylic sheets using a process called batch cell bulk polymerization. Gold mirrors are sometimes fused to the bottom of acrylic reflecting light throughout the trophy. Whether we use gold metals, gold paint, mirrors or acrylic – you can be assured the materials going into every acrylic Newline engraves is second to none and polished to perfection by craftsmen who care.
Extruded or cast, gold acrylic is a chemical process very similar to clear. A polycarbonate thermoplastic derived from natural-gas, acrylic is made by combining Methyl Methacrylate, referred to as (MMA) below with a catalyst. Usually an organic peroxide, the catalyst begins the chemical reaction but does not become a component of the Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) or acrylic. A gold tint is added to the monomer, resulting in a beautifully colored gold acrylic resin. The resin is poured into the mold, sealed and heated for a specific time and temperature to complete the chemical reaction.
Once the acrylic sheets are removed from the mold, they can be fabricated by cutting on a table saw or more commonly in the awards industry laser cut and polishing to perfect the finish to prepare the acrylic for laser engraving.
Gold Acrylic Mirrors
Nothing reflects light like a mirror and many of the gold acrylics we sell are highlighted using gold mirrors cast into the bottom of the upright to enhance their beauty. The light reflected through the acrylic takes on a rich golden tone adding a reflective depth to the laser engraved text and corporate logos.
Gold Painted Acrylic
Gold paint is sometimes used to color fill and highlight acrylic. One of our best-selling gold acrylics, the Gold Constellation is created out of clear acrylic carved into a wedge shape with a three-dimensional star carved from the back using a CNC router. It is then color filled using gold leaf paint. The result is an acrylic trophy that explodes with golden highlights throughout.
